It is mainly celebrated in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and in the Madhesh region of Nepal. The festival is observed over four days and involves rigorous rituals, including fasting, holy bathing, and offering prayers to the setting and rising sun.
The key elements of Chhath Puja include:
1. **Nahay Khay**: The first day involves bathing and preparing a meal to signify cleanliness and purity.
2. **Lohanda and Kharna**: On the second day, devotees observe a fast from sunrise to sunset, breaking it only after sunset with a simple meal.
3. **Sandhya Arghya**: The third day is marked by fasting without water and offering 'arghya' (offering) to the setting sun at riverbanks.
4. **Usha Arghya**: The fourth and final day involves offering prayers to the rising sun, marking the end of the fast.
